This has been the largest expedition to the Arctic of our time. In October 2019, the research icebreaker Polarstern let itself be frozen solid onto an ice floe so that it could then spend an entire year drifting through the Arctic Ocean. The scientists on board were able to explore the central Arctic more thoroughly than ever before and have made ground-breaking observations of climate processes. Their findings will now lead to a better understanding of the dramatic climate change in the Arctic and enable more accurate predictions. Project and expedition leader Markus Rex will describe the effects of climate change that are already visible in the Arctic and give an insight into the course of this unique expedition.
