Journalism is important for democracy. As an independent source of information, it enables citizens to make informed decisions. Journalism contributes to the formation of opinion, transparency and control of those in power. All this is essential for a functioning democracy.

However, trust in journalism can no longer be taken for granted. Many newspapers and magazines are losing subscribers. Social media is changing how people get news. Terms like "fake news" and "alternative facts" are doing the rounds. Many see dangers for our democracy. Even elections and political decisions can be influenced by the spread of fake news. Prejudices are reinforced and conflicts are deliberately stirred up. But what is a promising counter-strategy? And what can journalists themselves do to restore trust?

Claus Kleber and Stefan Brandt discuss how journalism can overcome current challenges and how it must change itself in order to continue to fulfil its role as the "fourth estate" in the future.
