In democracies, the media have a dual role: they serve as a source of information and are a critical control mechanism to monitor the actions of governments, state authorities and policymakers.

However, traditional information media such as newspapers and public broadcasters are facing increasing pressure today. The number of regular listeners and readers is in steady decline. In particular, the democratisation of the media landscape through the Internet and new digital formats is contributing to this. In the midst of these changes, conspiracy theories and disinformation campaigns are spreading at breakneck speed and threatening the common public sphere – and all this at a time when one crisis follows closely on the heels of another and the major challenges pressing down on us ideally require a common and solid base of information to enable rapid action.

Together with you and our guests, we want to discuss what type of reporting is needed to strengthen a general public geared towards a constructive approach. What might reporting that encourages us to play an active role in shaping the future look like? Do we need to focus more on finding solutions? And how can apocalyptic scenarios help?
