Nostalgia as a tool for desirable futures
Back to the future?
Everything used to be better – or did it? Nostalgia is a powerful emotion: it can connect, comfort, and inspire hope, but it can also obscure our view of what lies ahead. In times of change, we encounter nostalgia everywhere – in politics, pop culture, and personal memories. But what happens when we use nostalgia not as a retreat into the past, but as a resource for shaping the future?
In this workshop, you will experiment with memories, images, and emotions from the past and explore how they influence our ideas of tomorrow.
Open Lab Event

In a playful and speculative way, you will investigate how nostalgic images emerge, how they affect our imagination, and how they can be translated into new visions of the future.
Together, you will try out different approaches, develop initial prototypes, and test how nostalgia can help make desirable futures more tangible – without falling into simplified “everything-used-to-be-better” narratives. The workshop is a pilot format by Futures Probes and invites you to think along, play along, and imagine together.
