The Year of Science is an initiative of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and deals with the really big issues of our time. With its central theme “Freedom”, the Year of Science 2024 will be dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the German Basic Law – the foundation of our free and democratic order. “Every person shall have the right to free development of his personality,” Article 2 reads. This right to freedom has proven its worth, but continues to be challenged by crises. Reason enough to make freedom the focus of an entire Year of Science. To start things off, Futurium will be hosting a launch programme for the Year of Science 2024 to be opened by Federal Research Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger.
Pandemics, scepticism towards science, wars and their consequences, climate change and the energy crisis are putting freedom under pressure, both nationally and internationally. Especially in times of crises, we as a society need a common understanding of freedom – one that has been fought for and achieved in a constructive way, of course. In line with the Federal Constitutional Court’s ruling on climate protection, we need to think about how we can protect the freedom of future generations. At the same time, it is not yet possible to predict what impact the advancing digitalisation – with topics such as artificial intelligence and ChatGPT – will have on our freedom. The Year of Science 2024 is dedicated to precisely these uncomfortable questions.
