Open Lab Night
MY-CO Build
Have you ever wondered what design thinking is, how a 3D printer works and how a robot is programmed? And what exactly does all this have to do with the future? Then you've come to the right place in the Futurium Lab! Every Thursday we invite you to get to know methods and tools for shaping the future together with our creators and to develop new ideas for the future.

Let’s unleash the potential of fungi together and develop sustainable solutions for the construction industry. During this workshop you will learn cultivation techniques to grow edible mushrooms an build your own mushroom material, get in touch with the Berliner transacademic mushroom community, experience how to set up a self-organized mycology lab at home and fabricate a modular block made of mycelium composite materials.
During the workshops we will cover the following topics:
Introduction
- Impulse of Sven Pfeiffer on Fungal Architecture
- Course presentation
Lectures
- Building with fungal materials
- Mushroom biology
- Building a home biology lab
- The edible mushroom industry
- Bioremediation with mushrooms

- Prepare jars of grain spawns
- Start a liquid culture
- Prepare substrate to grow objects
Fungal fabrication training

Workshoplead
Prof. Sven Pfeiffer, Architect
Sven Pfeiffer is Professor for digital design, planning and construction Hochschule Bochum. His focus in research and teaching is on the potential of digitally supported and generative design and production methods in architecture, design and art.
Alessandro Volpato, Biologist
Alessandro, designs tools to facilitate the learning process in life sciences and explore interdisciplinary research, in- and outside universities. To do that, he transfers knowledge to non-experts by consulting, hosting workshops, designing open source tools and fostering critical discussion about biotechnology and innovation.
Background biologist, he is involved in citizen science projects to bring science closer to society, and organises demonstrative booths to visualise how open scientific tools can support industrial innovation processes.
