East and West – a never-ending story?

Let’s talk about … mit Steffen Mau

This year marks 35 years of German reunification. The relationship between the former East and West Germany continues to be hotly debated – often loudly and producing more heat than light, including some playing of the blame game. One of those involved in the pursuit of reaching understanding and agreement in a fact-based and accessible manner is the renowned sociologist and professor at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin Steffen Mau. In this edition of our discussion series “Let’s talk about...”, he’ll be sharing his insights with Futurium Director Stefan Brandt.

Clichés about the other part of Germany persist even 35 years after the peaceful revolution and reunification. Differences in various areas can even be shown by statistics. Does today’s Germany really consist of two countries in one? Has the project of reunification failed? Berlin sociologist Steffen Mau, who himself grew up in the GDR – the former East Germany – has concerned himself with this topic for years. He claims that the democratic potential of the protest movement at the time – grassroots democratic approaches, for example – has been underutilised. His contributions to research and debate are factually sound, precise and at the same time easily understandable. They offer new perspectives and make unusual suggestions.

With Futurium director Stefan Brandt, Steffen Mau will discuss the realities and sensitivities in East and West Germany: what connects them and what sets them apart, prejudices and facts, and the East German path from the peaceful revolution to the present day. And, of course, the discussion is also going to be about the future: will we ever fully grow together? Can our differences also be an opportunity to find new paths together? What can we learn from the protest movement in the GDR for our common future? Join the discussion and help us develop ideas for living together in a Germany free of stereotypes.

The event will be filmed. The video will then be made available on our YouTube channel.
