AN EVENT ORGANISED TOGETHER WITH THE ALEXANDER VON HUMBOLDT FOUNDATION (AVH) AND THE GERMAN ACADEMIC EXCHANGE SERVICE (DAAD)

Academia in Exile

In a democratic society, the freedom of science is essential. Researchers and students will often adopt critical positions. In some countries, academics are forced to flee as a consequence. Exile becomes their new (academic) home and sometimes also a place of hope where they can talk about the future of democracy in their homelands.

This event will be conducted in English with simultaneous German translation.

An event organised together with the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

We have to be able to walk away
and still be like a tree:
as if the root remains in the ground,
as if the landscape is moving and we are standing rooted to the spot.
We have to hold our breath
until the wind dies down
and the foreign air begins to envelop us,
until the play of light and shadow,
of green and blue,
shows the old patterns
and we are at home,
wherever that may be.

Hilde Domin

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation sponsors scientists and scholars, irrespective of their disciplines and nationalities. It is committed to promoting international understanding, scientific progress and development.

In 2015, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs launched the Philipp Schwartz Initiative. With the support of this programme, researchers exposed to considerable and persistent personal danger in their countries of origin can continue their work at German universities and research institutions.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is the world’s largest funding organization for the international exchange of students and researchers.

With funding from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (AA), the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) provides scholarships through the Hilde Domin Programme. The programme aims to support threatened students and doctoral candidates from all over the world who are formally or effectively denied the right to education and/or other basic rights in their countries of origin. The scholarships enable them to begin or to continue their studies in Germany with the goal of obtaining a degree or a doctorate at a German university.
