People and things have been on the move for a very long time – but they have been moving ever faster and ever more frequently over very long distances. And thanks to tax exemptions for kerosene, flying to one’s dream destination is affordable, yet extremely damaging to the environment. Others take it even further: some of the wealthiest men in the world are sending private individuals on holiday trips into space.
But such trips are not only extremely expensive and consume huge amounts of energy. They also release a lot of polluting substances. While some people get on a train rather than a plane in order to protect the environment, others look forward with excitement to their first space flight. How can this be reconciled?
