Press Release 20 June 2022
Futurium at the Long Night of the Sciences – and a New Talk Series Starting in September
On 2 July, Futurium will be part of this year’s Long Night of the Sciences that is being held under the central theme “Science as an Answer to Fake News, Conspiracy Theories and Fatal Errors”. In September, Futurium will be launching a new series of talks hosted by Director Dr Stefan Brandt, with each talk having a special guest and being dedicated to a particular topic of the future. Federal Minister of Transport Dr Volker Wissing has been invited for the first talk on the topic of the mobility revolution.
Long Night of the Sciences at Futurium
On 2 July, Futurium will be contributing its own programme as part of the Long Night of the Sciences in Berlin and Potsdam. In times of fake news and politicised exchanges on Twitter, science – alongside journalism – has a special responsibility: it needs to remain sceptical in the best sense of the word, question itself, and not lose sight of the complexities of our modern world. Scientific thinking protects us against taking mere claims as real facts and getting bogged down in ideological worldviews.
Futurium will be involved in the event with its own exciting programme: journalists will be debunking fake news in a reporters’ slam, while Futurium’s exhibition organisers will be looking behind the scenes of science communication. Scientists and journalists will be discussing the influence of fake news on shaping the future. The Futurium Lab will demonstrate how to detect fake profiles on Instagram, Twitter and Co. And special guided tours will be on offer for children and night owls.
Our exhibition and the Futurium Lab will stay open until midnight. The programme is set to start at 17:00. Tickets are required to visit the Long Night of the Sciences.
About the Long Night of the Sciences – Berlin | Potsdam
At last, the Long Night of the Sciences will be taking place once again with in-person visits: on 2 July, from 17:00 until midnight, visitors are invited to enjoy numerous experiments, exciting presentations, science shows and guided tours. Various scientific and science-related institutions in Berlin and Potsdam will be participating. The Long Night of the Sciences is largely organised and financed by the participating scientific institutions themselves. The event is also supported by numerous partners from the region, in particular, Berlin Partner für Wirtschaft und Technologie GmbH and Technologiestiftung Berlin. Further information.
Let’s talk about... – with Volker Wissing!
In each edition of the new talk series, Futurum Director Stefan Brandt will be engaging with an exceptional guest. What all the talk guests have in common is that their work offers them special possibilities for shaping our future.
On 14 September, Federal Minister of Transport Dr Volker Wissing will be visiting Futurium. How can, how should, how must the transport sector be changed to enable society to reach the climate targets that have been set for 2030? Dr Stefan Brandt will be talking to Dr Volker Wissing about approaches to solutions, obstacles to implementation and the “big vision” for the desired mobility revolution. Starting at 18:30 on site at the Futurium Forum and as livestream.
