Looking back to look ahead: prospects for a resilient future
Let’s talk about … embracing the future
Technological upheavals, climate change, geopolitical crises and social polarisation: in a time of far-reaching global change, the future seems almost impossible to predict. Nevertheless, there is a widely shared desire across society to shape the world of tomorrow, starting today. But what does a democratic society need in order to retain its agency?

This latest instalment of the ‘Let’s talk about’ discussion series also marks the end of Futurium Director Stefan Brandt’s ten-year tenure. He will take up the post of Director-General at the Berlin Opera Foundation from January 2027 and will in future be responsible for Berlin’s opera houses and the State Ballet.
Together with distinguished guests from the worlds of academia and public life, we reflect on the diverse experiences since Futurium opened whilst looking toward what lies ahead. At the heart of this, we will ask: what does our democracy and society need to move forward into the future in a resilient, sustainable and constructive manner?
The conversation will combine personal reflection with questions about the future of society. At the same time, we’ll be invited to reflect on the conditions under which we can continue to shape our shared future in an open and democratic manner.
