Our refrigerators are full to bursting with exotic fruits for fruit salads, while asparagus has its place there throughout the year, even in winter, and avocado is never absent. Sounds delicious, but all this does have its effects. We tend to forget them because usually they’re not directly visible: long transport routes and intensive agriculture are damaging the climate and soil; rainforests are being cut down; and legions of harvest workers around the globe are being forced to work under very poor conditions. For all these reasons, many people hope for change. What if we were to cultivate more fruits and vegetables in our cities?
