Guest of the evening
As European Minister of State, Roth discusses with European colleagues a trillion dollar reconstruction package after the Corona crisis. With a view to aid for the EU economy, the SPD politician recently called for a focus on climate protection: "If we get involved in economic policy, this must also always serve climate protection".
Banking crisis, refugee crisis, right-wing populist tendencies - and now Corona. Suddenly the borders are tight. The question of which financial instruments are suitable for leading states and companies out of crises divides the community. In addition, there is now a widespread feeling that Corona has triggered national reflexes where help among friends would have been more appropriate. What should our common identity be based on these days? Are we experiencing nation-state thinking at the wrong moment when we talk about refugee distribution, export stops and coordinated emergency aid?
We want to know from Michael Roth: What must Germany learn from the Corona Spring 2020 to build trust in the EU and overcome division? Where could Europe develop in the future? Soon the German EU Council Presidency will begin: What projects do you have on your agenda to promote a common identity and solidarity among friends in the Union? What kind of Europe do you want to be proud of after the crisis?
ABOUT THE TALK SERIES
How does the view of the future change in a state of emergency? The corona pandemic and the way we deal with it shake up many things that otherwise seemed self-evident to us. The digitizability of life, recognition for everyday heroes and the social significance of culture, sport and nightlife - all this and much more is being put to the test. Where do social imbalances reveal themselves? Which foundations of everyday life are indispensable? What is really important to us when it really matters? And what consequences will people draw in the future? We want to discuss these questions in 30-minute digital talks with people from science, politics, business, civil society and the creative scene.
The recording of the conversation will be available here on Wednesday, 20 May from 20:15.
