On the differences and similarities between urban and rural dwellers
What makes us tick?
Urban life is usually associated with overcrowding, hustle and bustle, anonymity and stress. Life in the countryside seems to be the opposite: idyllic quiet, a sense of community and peace, but also long journeys and hard work. Our environment shapes our mental health, as well as our values, mentality and everyday reality. In the project “Your Emotional City”, we are investigating the influence of the urban environment on our emotions.

Do the attitudes and views of urban and rural dwellers really differ to the point of incompatibility? And are these discrepancies mere differences or have they already become battle lines, as one might assume with regard to socio-political issues and voting behaviour? Do people in cities and the countryside really tick so differently? How divided is our society – and how can we overcome this division?
This event is part of the citizen-science project “Your Emotional City” – a joint project of the Interdisziplinäres Forum Neurourbanistik e.V., the university hospital Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and Futurium, the House of Futures.
