The House of Futures can look back on yet another successful year: with more than 700,000 visitors in 2024, Futurium has once again retained its status as one of Berlin’s most popular museums and as a central location for anyone wanting to explore the questions and challenges of the future.

Change as a strategy for success

Futurium is constantly working to reinvent itself: by keeping its finger on the pulse of now, it picks up on trends and societal debates about the future and brings them into its exhibitions and programmes. This continuous whirl of change makes Futurium a lively place for exchange, reflection and inspiration.

Dr Stefan Brandt, Director of Futurium:

“We see ourselves as a cultural institution that never stops moving – we’re always listening, observing and addressing the issues that affect many people. Especially in these hugely uncertain times, we want to be a place for well-founded hope. We show that, despite all the challenges, there are always possibilities and paths for shaping the future in a positive manner. We’re therefore delighted that the public continues to show such great interest in what we have to offer.”

Nicole Schneider, Commercial Managing Director:

“Communicating possible futures in a convincing fashion requires not only innovation, but also the continuous development of our organisation. With great passion, and the commitment of our entire team, we’re facing up to current challenges in order to continue to encourage people to help shape a sustainable future.”

A place for discussing and shaping the future

In the world of today, characterised as it is by crises and uncertainties, Futurium sets its own tone as a place for the active shaping of the future. It shows how innovation, societal responsibility and sustainable thinking can lead through collaborative dialogue to answers to the pressing questions of our time. “We need places that give us courage and inspire us with hope without glossing over unpleasant realities,” Brandt stresses. “Futurium wants to be just that: a space in which new perspectives are developed and where people are encouraged to help shape the future.”

The fact that Futurium succeeds in addressing topics that are relevant to many people – while attracting, in particular, a young audience – is underlined by the latest figures from the KulturMonitoring (KulMon) visitor survey conducted by the Institute for Research on Cultural Participation: half of those surveyed stated that their decision to visit Futurium had been based on their keen interest in the topics covered. With this result, the House of Futures lies 12 percentage points above the average Berlin museum. Additionally, according to the latest KulMon data, Futurium visitors are on average around four years younger than the average museum visitor.

Review 2024

The year 2024 was an anniversary year full of “firsts”: in September 2024, Futurium and Undone released their first podcast “Enden: Pleasant Island”, which immediately made it into the top 10 of the podcast charts for productions in the German language. Futurium’s first science comic, “Lilly's Party”, raises the awareness of children and young people about the opportunities that exist for using raw materials responsibly. And, last but not least, the Mobile Futurium has been up and running since May 2024: with this offering, Futurium brings its content to schools in rural areas throughout Germany – an important step towards making topics of the future accessible to everyone. More than 10,000 pupils have already taken part in workshops brought to them by the Mobile Futurium.

Outlook 2025

In 2025, Futurium will be surprising its visitors with new themes and innovative event formats and projects. Among other things, the launch of the new thematic focus is planned for May, while the opening of a special exhibition is scheduled for late autumn.
