It’s only through conflict that we begin to think about how we actually want to coexist, says peace and conflict researcher Nicole Deitelhoff. In this edition of our event series “Let's talk about ...”, she discusses with Futurium Director Stefan Brandt why disputes do not necessarily cause divisions between us, but can actually unite us under favourable conditions.

How do conflicts shape societies – from local disputes to international crises? This is the key question in Nicole Deitelhoff’s research. In the course of the discussion, she explains the role of conflicts in the future of democratic societies and looks at their effects, which are not necessarily negative. Democracies thrive on conflict – but how much conflict can a society withstand? This also relates to how Europe can retain its capacity to exert influence in times of geopolitical tensions, upheaval and global crises. What alliances will we need in future if international coalitions shift and confidence in transatlantic stability continues to wane? And what values and interests should Europe embody in order to maintain its own voice of stability in a fragmented world?
