Our refrigerators are chock-full of exotic foods: pineapples, asparagus and our beloved avocados. Sounds delicious, but has consequences. What if we were to grow more fruits and vegetables in our cities?

Long transport routes and intensive agriculture are harmful to the climate and the soil, rain forests are chopped down, and farm labourers work under terrible conditions all over the world. Many people are aware of these problems and demand change: What if we were to grow more fruits and vegetables in our cities? And why don’t we go directly to the growers, if we want to know where our food comes from? Food-growing pioneers and new ideas are emerging everywhere. Although it could be a while before new practices can provide entire megacities with healthy and sustainably sourced food, we are off to a good start.
