New technologies, financial crises, environmental devastation and the growing gap between rich and poor all raise issues needing urgent attention. Economists as well as entrepreneurs are looking for ways in which the economy can both better protect nature and contribute more to society’s welfare.

Many people are dedicated to finding possible solutions. Instead of working for companies, they are active in independent networks where they only produce goods that are consistent with their own values, that are more environmentally friendly, or are designed to last a long time. Others set up platforms that enable a sharing economy. Some engaged companies set themselves new goals beyond the market and profits. And each and every one of us needs to answer this question: how much do we have to work to make a living? Is there any time left over for contributing to the common good?

Our expert Prof. Dr. Maja Göpel from WBGU gives some answers to this question in an interview.
